Georgia O’Keeffe (1) – Large flower painting.

Paint a larger than life close-up study of a flower.

What will my children learn?

During this lesson your children will –

Be encouraged to really look at the small details of flowers-lines, textures, and subtle colour variations they might normally miss.

Use a magnifying glass to zoom in on a section of a flower and begin to grasp how organic forms are built and how shapes relate to each other.

Paint a large scale picture of something small, helping them explore the impact of size and how it changes the way we experience an object.

Gain an insight into how an image can be cropped for the sake of visual interest, just as O’Keeffe often did by filling the canvas with a close-up rather than showing the whole flower.

Practice mixing colours to match the subtle hues of petals and shadows, whilst exploring how layering light and dark tones can add depth and dimension.

Reflect on how different shapes and colours can evoke moods or feelings, and create dramatic, simplified compositions.

Practice fine motor skills when carefully drawing and painting.
