Providing fun, practical art history lessons to young children for over 11 years.

Hi!

My name is Julie and I trained as a primary school teacher at St Martin’s College, Lancaster, along with studying a BA degree in art and design. I am a mixed media artist, but my main passion is teaching art.

I started teaching practical art history lessons from my home studio in Halifax, England over 11 years ago and the activities have been enjoyed by hundreds of children.

The lessons cover a wide variety of famous, and not so famous, artists such as Michelangelo, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo and lots, lots more.

I’m passionate about art history and I believe teaching the visual arts is very important for the development and education of young children. Art is the crucial backbone for many other subjects, and it has a positive effect on all other developmental fields. It boosts general wellbeing and assists in preparing children for life beyond school.

All the activities in this store have been tried and tested with children aged from 4 years to 12 years old. The main aim of the Artful Stars’ program is to give young children the opportunity to release their creative energy and enjoy the process, all whilst learning about the life and work of artists from around the world.

There are many lessons available to download from this store, and more are being added all the time.

What’s Included with every lesson:

 – Meet the Artist! An introduction to the life and works of the featured artist for you to read to/with your children. This includes a brief description of the art movement they were/are involved in.

 – A step-by-step Lesson Plan for each activity for you and your child/children to follow, with a suggested resource list. If there are two or more lessons needed to complete the activity then each one will be numbered individually, e.g. Lowry 2.1, 2.2, 2.3. One lesson will take approximately one hour, but this depends entirely on the children’s abilities and ages.

Although the lessons are numbered they can be completed in any order you wish and many materials can be substituted for ones you have available if preferred.

 – Printouts. Some lessons are accompanied with a printout to aid the activity.

– Instructions. A detailed instructions sheet explaining the layout of the lesson plan.
